Brie Larson’s win for Room increased speculation about the Best Actress award at the Oscars, probably the toughest category this year, with such great performers as Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl), Cate Blanchett (Carol), Jennifer Lawrence (Joy) and Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) in the mix. The film was a part of the 2015 edition of the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) line-up.
The stars of the winning films, Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon, also took home the Globes for best actor, for a drama and comedy, respectively. Damon won best comedy actor for “The Martian”, about an astronaut stranded on Mars, and the film also won the best comedy/musical movie category.
“Inside Out” was the best animated film, while Aaron Sorkin walked away with best screenplay for “Steve Jobs”, and Sam Smith’s “Writing’s on the Wall” from Bondflick “Specter” was judged the best song. He won a Golden Globe as best dramatic actor for the 19th century survival epic.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet share a moment at the Golden Globes 2016.
Host Ricky Gervais was at his most caustic, particularly when introducing presenter Mel Gibson.
It’s widely believed that the Globes predict the Oscars, despite industry critics (including four-time host Ricky Gervais) that blast the award show’s credibility.
Other popular winners includes Sylvester Stallone, 69, who received a standing ovation as best supporting film actor for reprising his iconic role as boxer Rocky Balboa in “Creed”, beating presumed frontrunner Mark Rylance for “Bridge of Spies”.
Bryan Cranston is the Hollywood Reporter’s second most favorable prediction for best actor, for his role in Trumbo. While Spotlight seems to be the frontrunner of Oscar predictions for best picture, The Revenant beat out Spotlight for best picture at the Golden Globes.
In the television category, “Mr. Robot” won for best TV drama series.
“Wolf Hall” won as Best TV Movie or Limited Series while “Inside Out” was the Best Animated Feature Film.
During the awards ceremony, Gervais took a dig at the former Olympic athlete, who was known as Bruce Jenner before her transition, saying: “I’ve changed”.
