Mexico not directly investigating Sean Penn over Chapo Guzman meeting

It is unclear which district will succeed in being able to prosecute El Chapo, or how long the extradition process will take.
Extraditing Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman to the United States could take a year or more, Mexican authorities said on Monday, while the slippery drug lord waits in the prison he previously escaped from. According to Penn, the connection between him and the Mexican drug lord was organized with the help of telenovela and film actress Kate del Castillo.
The question of journalistic privilege has been a hotly debated topic in the United States, with federal courts disagreeing on how much reporters are protected.
‘El Chapo’ saga: What happens next?
The drug lord was recaptured in his native Sinaloa state early Friday after a shootout that killed six of his people.
He faces numerous charges in the US, including drug trafficking, kidnapping and murder.
The article revealed that the actor traveled to Mexico to interview the drug lord in October, while Guzman was on the run from Mexican authorities after escaping prison. Penn spent hours talking with Guzman, and Guzman bragged that he had supplied “more heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana than anybody else in the world”. Guzman’s second prison escape in 2015 from a top security prison though a tunnel had embarrassed President Enrique Pena Nieto and made his capture a national priority.
She later said that her messages to Guzman were “ironic” but Penn wrote in Rolling Stone that the kingpin sought to send her flowers afterwards.
Images released to a Mexican newspaper showed that Penn and Del Castillo were under surveillance.
The Rolling Stone article based on an interview Penn conducted with El Chapo, published on Saturday, has sparked controversy and spurred discussions on social media with hashtags such as #NoSeanPenndejos, a clever play on words meaning “don’t be an idiot”.
The US rock magazine posted an October 2 picture showing Penn shaking Guzman’s hand during the meeting in an undisclosed jungle clearing in Mexico. But as he flew to Mexico for the meeting, he wrote “I see no spying eyes, but I assume they are there”.
Describing the capture, Attorney General Arely Gomez said that investigators had been aided in locating Guzman by documented contacts between his attorneys and “actors and producers” she said were interested in making a film about him, though she did not name them.

The move has forced Mexican authorities to abide by the legal timetables, which could take about one to five years to complete, according to observers.
