Indian comedian arrested for imitating ‘guru in bling’ Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh

Slamming the arrest of comedian Kiku Sharda, Congress today said such actions make India look like a “tin pot republic” and the Haryana Police should be “ashamed” of carrying out the arrest. Initial investigation failed to verify the facts.

Lashing out at the Haryana government, the party termed the arrest as a blatant act of muzzling creative people and was done at the behest of the self-styled spiritual Guru. Kiku’s well wishers and co-actors criticized the police action as the actor had apologised the next day on December 28. Best known for playing the character Palak on the show Comedy Nights with Kapil, Sharda was arrested from the sets of the TV show, on Wednesday, at 2 am.

Kiku Sharda, 40, was sent to judicial custody for 14 days by a court in northern Haryana state after he was arrested in Mumbai late on Tuesday, a senior police officer said. The actor was later released after he furnished a surety bond of Rs 1 lakh. “We learnt of his whereabouts and arrested him”. Chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar, however, distanced himself from the controversy saying that the actor was arrested on the basis of an FIR registered against him in a Kaithal police station.
