NFL Insider: Ben McAdoo to be named Giants head coach

McAdoo interviewed with the Giants on Tuesday and was reportedly offered the head coaching position for the division rival Philadelphia Eagles to replace recently fired head coach Chip Kelly. Despite two 6-10 seasons that led to the departure of Coughlin, McAdoo’s offense finished 2014 ranked 10th and were ranked eighth in 2015.

“Ben’s a great coach”, Rodgers told Newsday last week when asked about McAdoo. McAdoo, according to a source, “wanted the NY job from the beginning”. “I’m very comfortable and confident that I’ve been groomed to do the job well”.

But it’ll be McAdoo’s offense, and one that quarterback Eli Manning excelled in this season. Philbin and McAdoo worked together in Green Bay from 2006-2012.

McAdoo has been the Giants’ offensive coordinator for the past two seasons.

An announcement is expected to come as early as Thursday.

It is a drastic swing for the franchise considering the 69-year-old Coughlin was the league’s oldest coach this season. They have also interviewed Doug Pederson, a former Eagles quarterback and now the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, but would have to wait until the Chiefs are out of the playoffs before making that hire.

It’s clear the Giants believe this big mess was all the fault of Tom Coughlin, two-time Super Bowl victor and future Hall of Fame coach. “I think he has some good qualities”.

McAdoo then coached at three colleges before getting a low-level job with the New Orleans Saints. While they never interviewed him, they also expressed interest in Hue Jackson, who was hired today to coach the Cleveland Browns after declining to interview with the Giants for their job. “I’m real excited for the opportunities in front of him”.

Jackson had also interviewed with the 49ers and was scheduled to meet later this week with the Giants, but Haslam was not going to be outbid.
