Remi Garde hails ‘brave’ Micah Richards for facing up to fans

Aston Villa’s Remi Garde says the problems at the club have been accumulating for many years. Villa are struggling in the Premier League bottom of the table and looking like a team destined for relegation.

Murphy said: “You would think Villa should have enough to win the replay. I have no regrets about coming here”.

Garde has asked the board to make a statement after facing numerous questions he has been unable to answer and Lerner is expected to break his silence on Monday.

“With my football hat on I know what it means in the hearts of my players (to play at Villa Park)”.

Captain Micah Richards side-footed Villa into the lead at Adams Park, only for full-back Jacobson’s spot-kick to earn League Two’s Wycombe a lucrative replay against their Premier League foes.

The visiting supporters vocally expressed their disgruntlement – and Garde said that came as no shock to him. “I’m not especially under pressure, but if I’m not winning games then I’m not silly as well”. They had a strong claim for a penalty turned down in the first half, saw referee Michael Oliver award Wycombe a dubious penalty for Ashley Westwood’s clash with Matt Bloomfield and suffered more agony when Gestede’s late deflected shot struck the bar. In every country it is the same.

“My next-in-command looked at me and said, ‘How are we gonna get through this?’ I said, ‘We’re gonna do it, we’re gonna go through this like a knife through butter.’ It’s easy to give up, but you can’t do that”.

And Garde – who is yet to win in 10 games as Villa boss – believes victory against Palace would be the best way to react.

Garde also backed Richards for getting involved in exchanges with Villa fans at the end, saying: “As professionals we have to face responsibility, not only Micah and me but all the players. At some point it is important that the Aston Villa voice is not only mine”.

The club’s powerbrokers are in NY spelling out a damning “rip it up and start again” verdict from Garde on the team he inherited. It was claimed on a Villa fan website that the captain intervened to calm the situation after two senior players told their own supporters to “fuck off”. “It’s very hard to have brought players here for at least three or four years and pay them to leave”. “We were upset to have conceded an equaliser and then everybody made individual runs without caring about the team balance”.
