Reed played under Ryan as a member of the Jets in 2013.

When Reed arrived in Baltimore as a first-round pick out of Miami, Ryan was the defensive line coach, then he became the defensive coordinator from 2005 to 2008 before taking over in NY. On Monday, the Bills announced Ryan’s twin brother Rob would join the team’s staff under the title of assistant head coach/defense.
Most notably, however, he won a Super Bowl with the Ravens in 2012, his final season with the franchise.
Ed Reed always played the game with tremendous heart and effort to go along with his skills.
Ed Reed, the longtime Ravens safety and a future Pro Football Hall of Famer, will be reunited with Bills coach Rex Ryan on his coaching staff.
Despite announcing Tuesday that defensive backs coach Donnie Henderson was not returning to the team, the Bills will have no shortage of coaching attention devoted to their secondary. “He’s a real student of the game as well and he’s going to be a phenomenal coach”. And Reed ended his career in 2013 playing for the Ryan-coached New York Jets.
According to NFL.com, Reed is the NFL’s all-time leader in interceptions-return yards and playoff interceptions.
His job on Buffalo’s coaching staff will mark his first foray into coaching, but renowned for his film study as a player, Reed is expected to make a smooth transition in imparting such wisdom on the men who play in the Bills defensive backfield.

Considering the issues the Bills had adjusting to Ryan’s complex defensive scheme a year ago, bringing in a player like Reed should help players adjust and communicate.
