Should Inarritu win again this year for “The Revenant”, he will be joining just two other directors – Joseph Mankiewicz and John Ford – who won the award for two consecutive years.

The high-octane action thriller “Mad Max: Fury Road” followed with 10 nominations, including best picture. Even with all of the nominations, I still think it’s a long shot to take home Best Picture, but we can dream, can’t we? The nominees for original screenplay are Tom McCarthy and Josh Singer for “Spotlight”, Matt Charman, Joel Coen and Ethan Coen for “Bridge of Spies”, “Ex Machina” director-writer Alex Garland, Jonathan Herman and Andrea Berloff for “Straight Outta Compton” and “Inside Out” scribes Pete Docter, Meg LeFauve and Josh Cooley.

The directors and cinematographers behind this year’s best picture Oscar nominees have also been nominated in their respective categories.

The 88th Academy Awards will be presented at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center on February 28.

Charlotte Rampling secured a best actress nod for her role in 45 Years, as did Irish actress Saoirse Ronan for Brooklyn, in which she plays a homesick immigrant in NY. Although being nominated three times for “Best Actor” and once for “Best Supporting Actor”, the star has been successively shunned.

Sylvester Stallone – widely seen as a sentimental favorite – received a nod for best supporting actor for “Creed”, in which he reprised his iconic role of boxer Rocky Balboa. They are: “The Big Short”, “Bridge of Spies”, “Brooklyn”, “Mad Max: Fury Road“, “The Martian”, “The Revenant”, “Room” and “Spotlight”.

Stallone writes in a statement that he was “incredibly humbled” by the nomination.

Earning nods for best animated feature: Disney/Pixar’s brainy Inside Out made the cut, as did Charlie Kaufman’s acclaimed stop-motion Anomalisa.

The foreign language category drew films from Hungary (“Son Of Saul”), France (“Mustang”), Jordan (“Theeb’), Denmark (“A War”) and Colombia (“Embrace the Serpent”)”.

Does Hardy have anything to do with the visual effects, sound mixing, sound editing, production design, makeup/hairstyling, etc., etc.in any of his films? And how great would it be if a Mad Max film managed to grab Best Picture?

But this year’s expected nominees already contain box-office hits (“The Martian”, the recently released “The Revenant”) and a number of major studio releases.
