Sean Penn: Nothing to hide over “El Chapo” interview
Mexican-American actress Kate del Castillo lashed out on Wednesday against reports about her relationship with drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, saying they “aren’t truthful”.

Guzman eventually met del Castillo face to face in an undisclosed jungle clearing in October, along with actor and director Sean Penn.
Four days after Penn’s October 2 interview, soldiers staged fierce operations in the area of Tamazula, Durango, where the meeting with Penn and Del Castillo took place.
“What’s that actor’s name?” the account identified as Guzman’s writes in one message.
The improved security measures also include reducing the number of inmates, quadrupling the number of cameras on the site and moving Guzman randomly, without warning, to different parts of the prison, Mexico government spokesman Eduardo Sanchez told Reuters.
Mexico’s government says it plans to extradite Guzman to the United States, where he is wanted on charges including drug trafficking, kidnapping and murder.
Following the meeting, troops entered Guzman’s remote mountain stronghold in northwestern Mexico in order to flush him out “toward a city”, a government official said on condition of anonymity.
Copies of TV episodes of La Reina de Sur, del Castillo’s most famous role, portraying a fictional trafficker, were found in the safehouse Guzman was hiding in prior to his capture. He identified her identified in his chat or text account as “ermoza”, a misspelling of the Spanish word for “beautiful”.
“I’ll take care of you”. “Most wanted shirt”, read a caption under the pictures.
Before his brazen jailbreak previous year, the notorious drug boss instructed his lawyers to trademark his name, giving Mexican authorities their first clue that he wanted to make a film of his life, local media said on Tuesday. “I told her about you”. “Come now because I’m dying to look after you, the way it should be”, he wrote.
Del Castillo responds in kind.
When asked for more information about what he would discuss with Penn, Rose said only that he didn’t want to comment ahead of the interview. “The first motivation was meeting Kate del Castillo and striking a relationship there”, Vigil said, citing intelligence sources.
“Not surprisingly, many have chosen to make up items they think will make good stories and that aren’t truthful. I’m so excited about our story”, she wrote on Oct 10. “The attorney General’s Office is investigating this event and others involving contacts that Joaquin Guzman had while he was on the run”.
In light of that, it is surprising that Guzman, who spent years evading capture, would have continued in such constant contact with the actress.
The warmth between the drug lord and the actress has surprised even Mexicans inured to the often stranger-than-fiction events of the drug war.
The newspaper said some of the messages were copied from an intercepted phone used by one of Guzman’s lawyers. “He has 18 children, he’s married to a woman 30 years younger than him”, said Alejandro Hope, a security analyst in Mexico City.
