According to new report from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), single mothers living with children under the age of 18 are not getting recommended minimum of seven hours of sleep each night.

Couples with children also suffer of some little amount of sleep deprivation, with 33 percent of them sleeping less than seven hours per night. However, 33 percent of couples living with children also reported not getting their recommended seven hours, making children the single link between adults and sleep deprivation.

Among two-parent families, men were more likely than women to get less than 7 hours sleep each night, at 34.1% and 31.2%, respectively. This small difference was also statistically significant. The report found that 24 percent of the single mothers and 17 percent of the single fathers had trouble falling asleep. Raising a child can be hard even for the parents who live together and share the chores.

In addition, 28 percent of single moms and 19 percent of single dads had trouble staying asleep four or more times a week.

The series was created to serve as an educational tool and resource for those trying to better understand the importance of sleep for healthy function for everyday living – an important lesson, especially for those raising children on their own. For men, 13 per cent had trouble falling asleep and 18 per cent had trouble staying asleep at least four times a week.

Interesting is that adults without children seem to struggle more with falling asleep and staying asleep.

All of this troubled sleep made a difference in the morning. Researchers even found that fully 50% of single parents living with kids including 52% of single moms and 40% of single dads did not feel well rested four or more days a week. Many single parents don’t receive any financial support from the other parent, and they have to take more than one job in order to be able to support the child.

The consequences of inadequate sleep resulted in the increased likelihood of single-parents being dependent on sleep medication, CDC warned.

Despite of all the above stated factors, the US CDC recommends women to have good sleep nights in order to live healthy and prosperous life.
