DiCaprio will fight it out with last year’s best actor victor Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl), Michael Fassbender for “Steve Jobs”, fellow Golden Globe victor Matt Damon “The Martian” and Bryan Cranston for “Trumbo”.

The Weeknd had his song “Earned It, ” from the film “Fifty Shades of Grey, ” nominated for the best original song Oscar.

The Grammy-winning singer recently won a Golden Globe for the track alongside his writing partner Jimmy Napes. The miss for “Carol” meant one usual Oscar heavyweight – Harvey Weinstein – won’t have a horse in the best picture race for the first time since 2008.

The Big Short’s director Adam McKay also received a nod, alongside George Miller for Mad Max: Fury Road, Spotlight director Tom McCarthy and Alejandro G Inarritu for The Revenant. It certainly has a head of steam – terrific box office numbers, lots of free press generated by star Leonardo DiCaprio’s physical endurance on the set, and enough critical consensus to push it over the edge.

“The Martian” director Ridley Scott and “Bridge of Spies” director Steven Spielberg, both of whom were left out of the directing category, despite seeing their films nominated for best picture. “Anomalisa” comes in at 2-1, followed by “Shaun the Sheep” at 3-1, “Boy and the World” at 6-1, and “When Marnie Was There” at 7-1.

Producer Simon Kinberg said the cast and crew are “shocked” following the nominations announcement on Wednesday morning.

The nominations for the 88th Academy Awards were announced on Thursday morning at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
