Mexican Government’s Keeping a Close Eye on ‘El Chapo’ in Jail
But for someone who grew up dirt-poor and barefoot in a remote mountain village, the glamour of the 43-year-old del Castillo’s stardom may have been irresistible.

TOMAS BRAVO/REUTERS Juan Pablo Badillo, a lawyer for El Chapo, trashed Sean Penn’s article and said it will mess up the drug lord’s defense.
Asked about the images Monday, Penn would only say: “I’ve got nothin’ to hide”.
Beginning Sunday, captured drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman will be moved from cell to cell as a way to ensure that he won’t escape a Mexican prison, a senior Mexican government official told CNN on Wednesday. Five of his henchmen were killed, and one officer was wounded, as El Chapo tried to sneak out through a secret passageway leading to the sewers beneath the city.

Del Castillo, whose chat name was “Beauty”, answered: “I must confess that I feel protected for the first time”. “Upon meeting Penn, the drug kingpin consented to an interview at a later time”.
In the interview in Rolling Stone, Guzman defended his role as the head of the world’s biggest drug-trafficking organization, blamed for thousands of killings.
Another text from the drug lord reads: “How is the best and most intelligent woman in the world, who I admire a lot?”
“All they wanted was to gain fame and to make money”, Velazquez said. The photographs bolster the idea that authorities were tracking Penn’s movements in a bid to find the elusive Guzman. The shop, called Barabas, has fully embraced Guzman’s endorsement and is marketing the button-up as the “Most Wanted Shirt”. They’re very versatile, you can wear them on a night out in town, or to dig drug tunnels.
The report also suggests Del Castillo had been under surveillance ever since she met Guzman’s lawyers in Guadalajara in June.
The government official said the messages were genuine and that Guzman “had a kind of obsession” with the actress that was his undoing.
Legal experts doubt that the actors will face charges, especially if their meeting with Guzman is seen as journalistic work.
The Marines lost him, until the raid on his safe house in the city of Los Mochis, in Guzman’s native state of Sinaloa early on Friday morning, when he almost managed to escape again through the city’s sewer system before being picked up by police.
“You’ll see when you come”, Guzman, who went by the name “Papa” in the messages, wrote on September 26, just over two months after his escape from a maximum-security prison.
Providing El Chapo doesn’t escape for a third time – he was carted away hidden in a laundry basket during his first break out in 2001 – Mexico says it plans to extradite him to the United States, although officials say the process could take anywhere between one and five years.
