He confirmed the rumours with a concise tweet saying “iArena, 11pm Latitude” causing a rush of fans to make their way to the venue located deep in the woods of Henham Park, Southwold.

At the end of the sequence, which was received with laughs and cheers from the crowd, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament logo rose into shot on the Obelisk Arena’s three huge screens while the band hammered out uncompromising electronica.

The festival’s other big news was the surprise performance by Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke in the early hours of Sunday.

Striking a sombre note, however, he also paid tribute to Nick Cave, the musician whose 15-year-old son Arthur died after falling from a cliff in Sussex last week.

And over on the 6 Music stage Sun Kil Moon covered Cave’s ballad The Weeping Song.

24-year-old Sheeran, who became the most streamed artist in the world previous year after his latest album X accumulated more than 860 million streams on Spotify in 2014, famously made some of his earliest festival appearances at Latitude at the start of his career.
