J&K Govt Formation: Will PDP’s Drabu, Naeem Akhtar lose their political clout?

PDP leader Tariq Hameed Karra on Tuesday opposed continuation of the party’s alliance with BJP, claiming it is not acceptable to the people of the State, and batted for formation of the new government headed by Mehbooba Mufti with support of “secular” parties, including Congress.

In 2008, Governor’s Rule was again imposed after Sayeed’s PDP pulled out of the Congress-led coalition government led by Ghulam Nabi Azad in June following massive protests across the state for and against the allotment of land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board.

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti today showered praise on Jammu and Kashmir’s bureaucracy, saying it had worked with “single-minded dedication” and “out-of-box thinking” to ensure good governance under the Chief Ministership of her father late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. “The PDP has not set any conditions”, he said.

Mr. Sayeed, a former Union Home Minister (December 1989 to November 1990), had taken over as Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir for the second time on March 1, 2015 at the head of a PDP-BJP coalition.

Days after the demise of Jammu and Kashmir CM Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, it seems that the BJP and PDP are renegotiating the terms of their alliance.

He also rejected as “mere speculation” the reports that both parties have put up fresh conditions, insisting that no political discussion had started between them as Mehbooba was in deep mourning.

“As far as I am concerned, there is no suspense”. The State continues to be under Governor’s rule.

While Sonia Gandhi did not talk to reporters, Azad said they had “come only for condolences”.

Analysts say that when the PDP and BJP forged an alliance with Mufti Sayeed at the helm of affairs, the latter had the upper hand on the negotiation table.

No notification for Governor’s Rule has been issued, Raj Bhavan sources told IANS.

“We will take a call on government formation once we receive a formal communication from the Peoples Democratic Party”.

Swamy on Monday while addressing media said, “If Mufti Mohammed Sayeed has passed away then its not necessary that his daughter becomes next Chief Minister of J&K”.

Mehbooba had to in an exclusive interview in 2014: “In 1996, Mufti sahib was told by the Congress high command that if it could not field a candidate from our Bijbehara hometown for elections that would be a huge embarrassment”. The state mourning ends on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, BJP MLAs are holding a meeting at the residence of Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh to discuss political situation in the state in presence of party’s National General Secretary Ram Madhav.

Another BJP source involved in Jammu and Kashmir described the situation as a “stalemate”.

Madhav said that the Mehbooba Mufti-led PDP has to take the first call
