Around three hours later, an official from the state confirmed that that feat was also achieved by tickets sold in Florida and Tennessee, the Associated Press reported.

Balbir Atwal, owner of the 7-Eleven franchise in Chino Hills that sold one winning ticket, said it was “very exciting”. The winning Florida ticket was sold at a Publix grocery store.

The winners of the world-record jackpot overcame odds of 1 in 292.2 million to land on all the numbers drawn Wednesday night, 4-8-19-27-34 and Powerball 10.

Matching five numbers, but not the Powerball number, can carry a $1 million prize, according to Powerball, but the California Lottery said the amounts won on those tickets was not immediately known late Wednesday.

If there is just a single victor, and they choose to take the cash prize instead an annuitized payout over 29 years, they would receive $930 million.

A lottery official says the estimated Powerball jackpot remains at $1.5 billion, still the largest lottery jackpot in the world.

Lottery officials in Tennessee say the winning ticket for the record Powerball jackpot in their state was sold in Munford, north of Memphis.

But statistics are a wet blanket if ever there was one, and millions of Americans kept their hopes alive, shelling out $2 per ticket.

The jackpot estimate, could increase for Wednesday night’s drawing if ticket sales continue to exceed expectations.

As you might imagine, with a record Powerball jackpot, the sound of the doorbell ringing as people go in and out to buy tickets has been nearly non-stop. Players have reportedly spent an estimated $2.6 billion on tickets, which cost $2 or $3 apiece, since the last jackpot was claimed. The game is played across 44 states and the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
