Why Donald Trump is (still) the GOP front-runner

The House’s highest-ranking Republican woman said Thursday South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley should be judged on her abilities, not her looks, dismissing a remark by fellow Republican Rep. Steve King.

Trump has proposed deporting the several million illegal immigrants here in the US, building a wall on the border with Mexico and temporarily halting immigration by Muslims in the wake of the terror attacks in Paris and San Bernardino.

HALEY: During anxious times, it can be tempting to follow the siren call of the angriest voices.

Dubrowski says that despite the fact that the palmetto state does again rank number one in the country for men murdering women-she says changes like these will turn things around. However, Haley is standing by her words and not backing down on her claims.

Defending her speech, Haley said she said what she believed.

“She put a very good face on the Republican Party in her talk on the night of the State of the Union”, he said.

She’s also seen her share of criticism for remarks directed at Donald Trump.

The businessman-turned-politician also suggested Haley was a hypocrite by saying she would come to him hat in hand for campaign contributions if he was not running.

“Speaker Ryan and Gov. Haley provide an important contrast, particularly with independent voters, to show what the Republican Party is really about, and it’s not about Donald Trump”, said Brian Walsh, a Republican strategist. “We can all clap about that”, he said.

But Haley didn’t stop at criticizing Trump.

Speaking of Trump makes me wonder whether he genuinely is angry (option #1 above) or is faking anger (option #3, i.e., demagoguery).

“Well, when you see Donald Trump, you might want to duck tomorrow night”, she playfully warned.

But former HP chief executive Carly Fiorina argued that Americans have a right to be angry about issues such as illegal immigration.

“When you hear people peddling this fiction about our enemies getting stronger and America getting weaker, when you hear folks say we can solve challenges just by looking meaner and talking tougher and carpet-bombing wherever we want, that’s just hot air”, he said. Republicans needed to be honest with themselves, Haley said, “While Democrats in Washington bear much responsibility for the problems facing America today, they do not bear it alone”.

‘Our country is being ruined by incompetent people, ‘ he added.

While her speech was strongly praised by many Republicans on Capitol Hill, the reaction from some of Trump’s sympathizers was harsh.

Appearing on Fox News’ “On The Record”, she told host Greta Van Susteren that she considers Trump “a friend”, but disagrees with him on the issue.

Hewitt asked Coulter what she thought about Cruz’s eligibility to be president and Coulter said, “I’ve always thought he wasn’t natural born”.

Such rhetoric from two young and charismatic officeholders cheers establishment Republicans who fear that the rise of Trump and of Texas Sen.

To help “fix” US politics, Obama pressed for an end to “gerrymandering”, the practice of drawing voting districts in ways that gives advantage to a particular party; reducing the influence of “dark money” or political spending in which funding sources do not have to be disclosed; and making voting easier.
