North Korea seeks China help on treaty with U.S., or more tests
Fraternal relations between Beijing and Pyongyang have become strained in recent years, but China has been reluctant to impose economic restrictions that could destabilize its wayward neighbour and cause turmoil on its border.

The test also alarmed Japan. “Exclusively depending on Beijing’s pressure to force the North to give up its nuclear plan is an illusion”, it said.
– North Korea’s announcement draws strong condemnation from governments around the world.
Troops have reportedly been deployed into the border region.
When animosities sharply rose in the spring of 2013 following North Korea’s third nuclear test, the USA took the unusual step of sending its most powerful warplanes – B-2 stealth bombers, F-22 stealth fighters and B-52 bombers – to drills with South Korea in a show of force. Even so, precedent suggests that, once discussion of sanctions gets underway at the Security Council, the Chinese government will probably ask for the weakening of sanctions that might provoke North Korea too much.
It was so popular among young and old that Kakao Talk, South Korea’s most popular messenger app, created emoticons, or animated images, from the music video. Seoul can’t stand down easily, some analysts say, and it’s highly unlikely that the North will express regret for its nuclear test, which is a source of intense national pride.
US Secretary of State John Kerry said yesterday he had made clear in a phone call with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi that China’s approach to North Korea has not succeeded.
South Korea’s meteorological agency said separately that it had not detected any radiation after North Korea said it successfully conducted the test.
GIMPO, South Korea South Korea’s initial retaliation to the North’s latest nuclear test was a mix of K-pop, scathing commentary on its nuclear programme and derision of the ruling family’s penchant for costly clothes and luxury handbags.
“The initial analysis is not consistent with the North Korean claims of a successful hydrogen bomb test”, White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters this week. Speculation has focused on leader Kim Jong Un’s apparent inability to consolidate power four years after taking over following his father’s death – he has carried out a number of bloody purges of top officials – and a need to rally the populace of the impoverished country with displays of military might.
Cho also said the South’s military was ready to respond if the North reacted to the renewed broadcasts with armed hostilities.
However, he said Thursday that the approach was no longer welcomed by the United States.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Barack Obama spoke to the leaders of South Korea and Japan, who both joined the President in condemning the test. Obama reaffirmed the United States’ defense commitments to both of its regional allies.

Seismic waves created by Wednesday’s blast were nearly identical to those generated in North Korea’s last nuclear test in 2013, Jeffrey Park, a seismologist at Yale University, wrote in a post on the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists website, adding to scepticism about the hydrogen bomb claim.
