“It’s quite nice to be woken up at 1am with text messages and phone calls to be told our film has been nominated, and to have so many Australians”, Miller says.

Mad Max: Fury Road is up against The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, The Martian, The Revenant, Room and Spotlight for the Best Picture Award. Actress in a Leading Role nominees are two-time victor Cate Blanchett for Carol, one-time victor Jennifer Lawrence for Joy, Brie Larson for Room, Saoirse Ronan for Brooklyn and Charlotte Rampling for 45 Years.

Veteran Queensland-born filmmaker Miller had planned to shoot Fury Road in the Australian outback, but when unseasonal rain turned the arid landscape into handsome wildflowers he was forced to move it to the west African nation of Namibia. I said no, [another Mad Max movie] will not be next, and she took that to mean I never wanted to make another Mad Max. While the narrative unfolds through the eyes of her son, their stories are so emotionally and dramatically intertwined that it’s impossible not to view this as her story as much his.

Mad Max: Fury Road was also partly shot at Fox Studios in Sydney and some other locations in the harbour city.

“Fury Road” was not far behind, securing 10 nominations.

The eight films nominated for Best Picture are The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Mad Max, The Martian, The Revenant, Room, and Spotlight. Smith, it should be noted, received a Golden Globe nomination for best actor in a drama.

Rosie’s film is up for awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Production Design, Best Film Editing, Best Visual Effects, Best Hair and Make-up, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing.

Australia’s previous record for nominees was in 2002 when Baz Lurhmann’s Moulin Rouge led an Australian contingent of 13 Oscar nods.
