One winning ticket was sold at a 7-Eleven in Chino Hills, California, said Alex Traverso, a spokesman for that state’s lottery.

In addition to the $1 million victor, five tickets worth $50,000 were also sold in West Virginia.

The six winning numbers were 8, 27, 34, 4, 19 and the Powerball, 10.

Some took selfies with the store clerk on duty, who became an instant celebrity and may well have been the man who sold the ticket after being on duty for much of the run-up to Wednesday night’s drawing.

Munford auto body shop worker Jerry Caudle said he was “freaking out” when he heard a winning ticket was sold in his town, but then saw that he matched only two numbers and the Powerball, for a prize of $14.

“I spent most of the night waking up everybody else in the house”, Windey said. The multiplier drawn for Wednesday’s drawing was 2, thus doubling the $50,000 prize.

“The lottery came out as a promise to increase education funding, but what actually happened was that they just replaced it with state funding”, said Karen McCann, the president of Alachua County Education Association, the county teachers union.

Braun was among hundreds of people who at 7:59 p.m. Wednesday was checking his phone to see the Powerball numbers.

Melbourne Beach’s 3,100 residents live on a spit of beachfront no bigger than one-square mile.

The other winning tickets were sold in Tennessee and Florida.

Each third of the jackpot is worth $528.8 million if taken over 30 years, or $327.8 million if taken as a one-time payment.

The estimated jackpot amounts had risen steadily since November 4, when it was reset at $40 million.

For Wednesday night’s drawing alone, Powerball sales totaled $1,270,206,274.

The Powerball game is played in 44 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands, but California leads the country in Powerball ticket sales.

Russ Lopez said Thursday that getting such a windfall is the start of a “new journey”.

“Price purchased his winning ticket at a 7-11 station in Chino Hills, California”.

A news release says Tennessee Lottery President Rebecca Hargrove is on her way to Munford, which is about 25 miles north of Memphis.
