The statement also requested that the family’s privacy be respected at this time.

The couple, who were 26 years apart in age, married in an elaborate ceremony in 1994 at Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal that drew throngs.

René had been undergoing treatment for the disease, but his struggle was very hard on Celine as well as the pair’s three children – 14-year-old son, Rene, and five-year-old fraternal twins Eddy and Nelson. Angelil also has two adult children from a previous marriage.

Dion took two career breaks to look after Mr Angelil after he was diagnosed with throat cancer, first in 2000. In 1961, as Angelil, Beaulne and Labelle were approaching their 20s, they quit school to go into full-time performing.

A spokesman for the Clark County Office of the Coroner told media organizations that Angelil died of throat cancer and was under the case of a physician at the time he passed away. Angelil passed following a lengthy fight with cancer. “It’s my 12-year-old daughter”.

Avril Lavigne offered the family “strength and peace” writing, “Sending Celine Dion and her family my love and prayers for strength and peace”. “Sometimes he just wants me to enter into a different place with him”, she said. “I’m being heard through my interviews, through my song”, she said. It’s not selfish, it’s like, ‘I’m with you.

Born in Quebec to Lebanese-Syrian immigrants, Angelil started out in music dabbling in yeye – French 60s music – before trying his hand at comedy, and finally settling on a career in music management. Dion has cancelled her upcoming performances at The Colosseum this weekend but is scheduled to return to her schedule February 23at Caesar’s Palace.
