The Force Awakens has already been named the biggest movie ever in the US and Canada, after passing the $760.5 million (£507 million) Avatar hauled in on Wednesday (06Jan16).

“The Revenant” still had much to celebrate. It’s also the biggest film of all time at the U.S. box office, having now earned $812m in the States alone.

The Revenant stars Tom Hardy alongside Leonardo DiCaprio as a frontiersman named Hugh Glass on a fur trading expedition in the 1800s trying to survive after being mauled by a bear. This was enough to push the film past $900 million internationally. Despite the challenges, the film exceeded projections, which had it opening to around 20 million. “It’s very graphic, it’s very real”, Aronson said. The true story-based sports drama fell off badly, down 61% from last weekend.

George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road is the top-grosser to date in the best picture drama category, followed by Tom McCarthy’s Spotlight ($28.6-M), Todd Haynes’ Carol and Lenny Abrahamson’s Room.

And finally, “Daddy’s Home” brought in an estimated $15 million, showing goofy comedies can have staying power, too. “He is on a great streak of picking great movies and aligning himself with top tier directors”. We have the complete schedule of upcoming Star Wars movies right here.

There were other films looking to share in the post-holiday spoils.

Debuting in fourth was the horror film The Forest which made $13.1M, according to estimates, from 2,451 theaters for a per screen average of $5,340.
