The brutal frontier saga “The Revenant” leads the 88th annual Academy Awards with 12 nominations, while the acting categories were again filled entirely by white performers.
The British star is likely to face competition in the best actor category from Leo for The Revenant, Michael Fassbender for his role in Steve Jobs and Matt Damon for Ridley Scott’s adaptation of Andy Weir’s book, The Martian.
Sylvester Stallone, enjoying a new wave of popularity, scored a supporting actor nod for reprising his career-defining role as boxer Rocky Balboa in “Creed”.
DiCaprio and director Alejandro Inarritu, who received nominations for best actor and best director respectively, wrapped up warm to walk the red carpet with other stars from the film, Domhnall Gleeson, Will Poulter and Paul Anderson.
Spotlight actress Rachel McAdams and Jennifer Jason Leigh also landed nominations in the category.
Leonardo already won a Golden Globe for his performance a few days ago, but surprisingly the talk of the night didn’t revolve around his win. Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett are both brilliant in the mid-century lesbian love story Carol, but could split the vote – potentially leaving the Irish actress Saoirse Ronan to take the gong for her performance in another period piece, the low-key, lovely Brooklyn.

The ceremony will take place on 28 February with Chris Rock hosting for a second time.
