The Revenant picks up 12 Oscar nominations
This is the second nomination for George Miller, the director of the explosive apocalyptic thriller.

That film grabbed ten nominations overall. While the film won for best picture and director John G. Avildsen scored an Oscar, Stallone didn’t win.
Who do you think should win?
“The Revenant”, leading with 12 nominations, was not a surprise.
Sylvester Stallone – widely seen as a sentimental favorite – received a nod for best supporting actor for “Creed”, in which he reprised his iconic role of boxer Rocky Balboa.
Fury Road came up big in this year’s Oscar nominations.
Eddie Redmayne, “The Danish Girl”: Now playing in Fresno.
Actor Brie Larson is also nominated for her role as a mother held captive with her child for years in the film “Room”.
Nominations were announced shortly after the passing of Alan Rickman, famed for “Die Hard” and “Harry Potter” but never Oscar-nominated, at 69.
I was also disappointed to see Quentin Tarantino not nominated for best screenplay for the brilliant “The Hateful Eight”.
The long-shots for best picture at SportsBettingDime are Room and Mad Max: Fury Road, both at 12/1, while OddsChecker lists one site where you can get 100/1 odds for Brooklyn, making it the biggest long-shot bet on the Internet, as far as best pic is concerned. It’s easy to say that the reason there weren’t more people of color among the nominees is because there weren’t enough performances or opportunities for more nods.
“Why did the Oscars announce all the white nominees first?” quipped British comedian Ricky Gervais on Twitter, four days after he hosted the Golden Globes ceremony in Beverly Hills. He will be up for the Best Actor award against Matt Damon in The Martian, Bryan Cranston in Trumbo and Mass Fassbender from Steve Jobs.
The film “Carol” got nominations for both Best Actress, Cate Blanchett, and Best Supporting Actress, Rooney Mara.
The Oscars have also faced criticism in recent years for focusing on art-house content over blockbusters. “The Martian” and “Mad Max” are on DVD, with “Bridge of Spies” coming in early February. Though Star Wars: The Force Awakens demolished every box office record known to man, its five nominations reflect only its music and post-production editing.
Most notably absent from the Oscar nominations was “Straight Outta Compton”, the story about the rise of the rap group NWA.
Netflix’s first original feature, Cary Fukunaga’s “Beasts of No Nation”, was shut out. The film was nominated for an Oscar for best picture on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2016.
“We all dream in gold” is the theme of the 88th Academy Awards and for eight best picture nominees, the fantasy moved one step closer to reality this morning.

April Reign, managing editor of BroadwayBlack.com, who identifies herself as the creator of the #Oscarssowhite hashtag, tweeted on Thursday: “A five-minute opening by brilliant Chris Rock will not make up for over 80 years of erasure of marginalized communities”.
