“I’m not pissed. I’m not surprised”.

Many Twitter users voiced their opinions using the hashtag #Oscarssowhite, which originally debuted previous year when Oscars host Neil Patrick Harris commented that they were honouring the “best and whitest” at the 2015 ceremony. “It’s the Oscars – they do what they do”, he levelled. The people loved the movie. “I can’t be mad”. He explained: “It is nice to be recognised, but N.W.A. was anti-establishment, so we’re used to people trying to dismiss what we gotta say”. “The Martian” has bagged seven nominations while “Carol” and “Spotlight” got six each. Among the actors who had been expected to be nominated were Idris Elba, who earned rave reviews for his role as an African warlord in Beasts of No Nation, Will Smith for the sports drama Concussion, and Michael B Jordan for the Rocky sequel Creed. “The unbearable whiteness of being”, was another catchphrase repeated on Twitter.

The nominees for this year’s Academy Awards were revealed this morning and as always, several seemingly strong contenders failed to make the cut.

The F. Gary Gray-directed Straight Outta Compton, which charts the rise and fall of the California hip-hop group and features an all-black cast, did land a nomination in the Original Screenplay category. “Being left out of awards consideration is about more than just recognition for a job well done; winning an Oscar has long-lasting cultural and economic impacts”.
