Donaire makes mince meat of Settoul, eyes title shot

Donaire (34-3-0, 22 KOs) knocked down Settoul twice in the first round but he ran out of time to finish Settoul (20-4-0, 8 KOs) in the opening round.

Donaire is keen on regaining his stature as a pound for pound fighter and a world champion once again and believes a victory over Quigg whom Nonito recognizes as a “tough opponent” will help him regain his standing.

Meanwhile, Malacañang extended yesterday its congratulations to the former five-division world champion.

Coming off a TKO win over Brazilian William Prado here in March, Mr. Donaire showed that his comeback bid – after a devastating loss to Nicholas Walters of Jamaica in their featherweight clash past year – is now in full motion with his short work of Mr. Settoul.

“I think this is much easier for him, because Quigg is just moving forward, and he is much stronger than Quigg”, the elder Donaire said.

“I need to use all I have, including the right hand and the body shots”.

The multi-division (flyweight, super-flyweight, bantamweight, super-bantamweight and featherweight) world champion hurt the Frechman with both hands.

Donaire, wife Rachel and their two kids left for Las Vegas on Sunday night with Donaire promising he would train really hard for the Quigg fight which is likely to take place in November, most probably at the Manchester Arena in Britain although Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told the New Standard/boxingmirror.com that Dubai is in the running to stage the WBA title fight.

Unlike in the past when he threw caution to the winds and went after his opponent looking for a knockout, this time around, Donaire stuck to the game-plan his father/trainer worked out during training at the ALA Gym in Cebu, where he also benefited with some excellent sparring against promising prospects Mark Magsayo and Prince Albert Pagara, two undefeated fighters on the crest of global recognition.

Donaire has never backed down from a fight.

Quigg, in an interview with SkySports, addressed the subject of Donaire briefly, but didn’t commit to any preference of opponent for his next bout.

British magazine Boxing Monthly quoted Mr. Donaire as saying that he hopes to fight Mr. Quigg for the title and would be “happy” to have it even in the United Kingdom.
