Junior doctors in England strike first time in 40 years

John Sykes, who is training to be a GP, was one of about 100 medics who joined a picket line outside the hospital on Tuesday (January 12) during the first strike by junior doctors since 1975.

Any patient who has had their operation cancelled or appointment postponed this week should be clear – don’t blame the junior doctors, blame Jeremy Hunt.

“We love our job and I don’t think any of us have any regrets about career choice”.

Speaking to the public, striking junior doctors tried to put across their concerns over having someone who is in charge of making medical decisions in the fifteenth hour of their shift.

Warren took on the moniker “Guedel” for the clip, which he posted on YouTube.

“Other NHS staff fear that the dispute with junior doctors could be the dry run for a much bigger confrontation”.

Pictures have emerged of doctors in Gaza supporting British junior doctors in their battle against the Government’s efforts to introduce a new contract.

As a result, the BMA has said doctors would be paid less for working unsocial hours than they are under the current contract, with those working in specialties with a high proportion of weekend and evening working, such as emergency medicine, affected disproportionately.

There will be further disruption with more industrial action already planned if negotiations are unsuccessful.

NHS statistics show that 61 per cent of junior doctors took part in the 24 hour strike.

There will be a 48-hour stoppage and the provision of emergency care only from 8am on January 26.

On 10 February there will be a full withdrawal of labour from 8am to 5pm. “To avoid patient harm, not to cause it. To stand up against the unfair and unsafe contracts which the government are trying to impose, in a bid to try and protect the NHS for the future”.

A West Midlands hospital has also asked doctors to come off the picket line to help after a surge in patients. BMA council chairman Dr Mark Porter claims there are still “some serious issues about patient safety and recognition of junior doctors’ contributions that need to be sorted” which he says the Government is still refusing to acknowledge.

The trust running the QEII Hospital in Welwyn Garden City and Stevenage’s Lister is treating today as a bank holiday, because the British Medical Association (BMA) has called a 24-hour strike, starting at 8am.

Doctors were also quick to reassure people that patients were safe while they were on strike and promised to act if there was any emergency situation.
