Jim Caldwell retained as Detroit Lions head coach

Jim Caldwell will be back as the Detroit Lions head coach, General Manager Bob Quinn announced on Friday morning.

Coming on the heels of a Super Bowl appearance in Caldwell’s first season as a head coach and a 10-6 showing and first-round playoff loss in 2010, that decline was enough to prompt the Colts to make a change.

“I am obviously thrilled that I will continue to lead this football team”, Caldwell said in a statement released by the team.

“Jim’s entire body of work is impressive”, Quinn said in a statement.

He has been Lions coach two years, and his first season produced an 11-5 record and a playoff berth.

“Our entire focus now is on the off-season and all that it entails”. The superstar receiver may choose to retire after nine seasons.

With or without Johnson on the field, Caldwell will be on the sideline. A decision about Caldwell’s future was put on hold until the team found a new General Manager and that search concluded with the hiring of Bob Quinn last week.

The Lions will not be looking for a new head coach. And unlike Schwartz, Caldwell seems to treat stars the same way as seldom-used reserves. He came out of them realizing Caldwell is still the right man for the job. “If you’ve got a guy that has shown that he can be successful, and the guys like him, what more do you need?” he said.
