Oscar nominees honor only white actors for second year in a row

One Oscar voter told Business Insider late past year that he would not vote for “Mad Max” because he thought “it was really stupid”.

But absences were also stuck on repeat.

DiCaprio and director Alejandro Inarritu, who received nominations for best actor and best director respectively, wrapped up warm to walk the red carpet with other stars from the film, Domhnall Gleeson, Will Poulter and Paul Anderson.

The other best picture nominees are: The Revenant, The Martian, Room, Spotlight, Brooklyn, The Big Short and Bridge of Spies.

Besides Inarritu and Miller, others competing for the Best Director trophy include Tom McCarthy for “Spotlight”, Adam McKay for “The Big Short” and Lenny Abrahamson for “Room”.

Meanwhile the biggest movie in film history, Stars Wars: The Force Awakens managed to nab 5 nominations but failed to receive one for Best Picture. But many expected “Straight Outta Compton” to be nominated for best picture, and numerous handicappers had Idris Elba for “Beasts of No Nation” and Benicio Del Toro for “Sicario” as likely for best supporting actor.

Cheryl Boone Isaacs, the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who is black and who has pushed for more diversity in the Academy’s ranks since her election in 2013, acknowledged that more action was needed on that front.

“Even the cats are up running around, so we might have a cup of tea and then get back to bed”, laughed Miller around 2am on Friday, when asked about his plans for the rest of the night.

DiCaprio will fight it out with last year’s best actor victor Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl), Michael Fassbender for “Steve Jobs”, fellow Golden Globe victor Matt Damon “The Martian” and Bryan Cranston for “Trumbo”.

Sylvester Stallone, reprising his role as Rocky Balboa in “Creed“, looms large in the supporting actor category.

Also, Indian-American Pixar artist and director Sanjay Patel’s animated short film “Sanjay’s Super Team” managed to get nominated in the Best Animated Short Film category, where it is up against “Bear Story”, “World of Tomorrow”, “Prologue” and “We Can’t Live Without Cosmos”.

The best actress field is led by favorite Brie Larson for “Room”, along with Jennifer Lawrence (for “Joy”, making her, at 25, the youngest four-time nominee), Cate Blanchett (her seventh nod, for “Carol”), Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn”) and Charlotte Rampling (“45 Years”).

Along with Mara and McAdams, the best supporting actress nominees were Alicia Vikander (“The Danish Girl”), Jennifer Jason Leigh (“The Hateful Eight”) and Kate Winslet (“Steve Jobs”), her seventh nod. No filmmaker has directed two Best Picture winners in a row, but there is a first time for everything.
