Sylvester Stallone, enjoying a new wave of popularity, scored a supporting actor nod for reprising his career-defining role as boxer Rocky Balboa in “Creed”.
We see “The Revenant” and “Mad Max” as the biggest threat to other nominees, here’s WHY…
Who do you think will win?
Mark Ruffalo completes the category, having been cited for his role in Spotlight.
But he was excited to see the film in line for an awards season sweep, with three wins at the Golden Globes on Sunday and a field-leading 12 nominations at the Oscars.
Oscar likes epics this year, but it also likes films of quiet power.
“Films are making the bulk of their money in foreign markets so it’s going to be a business necessity for the industry to populate their films with the people of the world, who are not only black and brown but all other colors”.
“I hope this isn’t discouraging for anybody and for filmmakers in particular”, Isaacs said. Many expected a nomination for Ridley Scott to match the seven that his movie, the much-loved “The Martian”, had elsewhere. “The #Oscars this year looking a lot like a Trump rally”.
“Classic #OscarsSoWhite tho that Creed, with a black main character and director, only gets award nods for the white characters”, one tweet read.
Best actress contenders are Cate Blanchett, “Carol”; Brie Larson, “Room”; Charlotte Rampling, “45 Years”; Saoirse Ronan, “Brooklyn” and Jennifer Lawrence, “Joy”.
“Fury Road” will vie with “The Big Short”, “Bridge of Spies”, “Brooklyn”, “The Martian”, “Room” and “Spotlight” for best picture, the top Oscar award.
Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actress are shown in this combination of file photos (L-R) Alicia Vikander, Rachel McAdams, Rooney Mara, Kate Winslet, Jennifer Jason Leigh.
And more ammunition for critics of the academy – a lack of diversity among nominees.
“The Force Awakens” is a record-breaking force at the box office, but failed to land a spot on the list of best picture nominees.
On the other hand, such crowd-pleasing performers as Damon, Stallone, DiCaprio and Lawrence got selected in the performing categories. Only Walt Disney received more nominations; the studio founder had 59. Best Documentary and Best Original Screenplay.
“Spotlight”, the award-winning drama about the Boston Globe’s investigation into the Catholic Church’s pedophile priest scandal, received six nominations, including best picture, director and original screenplay. However, if anything, these two films will make Oscars’ final cut for Best Picture.
When talking about the best picture nominees, The Academy nominated 8 films, even when they could choose up to 10.
