In short, Square Enix announced that the game’s story is nearly finished but still needs more time before it’ll be ready for consumption.

You may remember that we reported on Dragon Quest XI in July here and here where it was revealed that there were “no concrete plans at the moment” to bring the game to the west, only that it would be “considered”. Earlier today a livestream focused on the series’ 30th anniversary has been aired online and series creator Yuji Horii has shared some new details on the upcoming Dragon Quest XI.
Previously Dragon Quest IX was confirmed in 2006 with an expected release date in 2007, and then it was delayed to 2008 and then Square Enix revamp the visuals during the 2008 Toky Game Show presentation, finally pushing it to a 2009 release with the American release a following year later. However, this release window is only targeting the Japanese market.
Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3 will release in Japan on March 24, 2016 for Nintendo 3DS.
The last major Dragon Quest release in Europe and North America was 2010’s Dragon Quest 9 for DS.
In addition to partnering with Universal Studios Japan on a theme park attraction, the video game company will host large events nationwide and release five new games during the year, hoping to win new fans among the young while keeping the flame burning among its faithful base of gamers now middle age or older.

It was not surprising that Dragon Quest XI was delayed to another year, as USGamer has pointed out that there is some sort of pattern that can be found in the development of Dragon Quest games.
