U.S. actor and rapper Mos Def has been arrested in South Africa for travelling with a fraudulent passport, a government spokesman said.

Bey appeared in court on Friday.

The Brooklyn rapper appeared in court alongside family members without permits, according to the Associated Press.

Smith entered South Africa on a legitimate US passport, but he overstayed his visitor’s permit, Tshwete said. Should Def (real name Dante Smith) receive a court order to leave the country, it could mean a ban of up to five years from South Africa.

On 09 January 2016‚ Mr Smith attempted to depart the country from the Cape Town International Airport by producing an unrecognised “World Passport”‚ which was declined by immigration officials.

“This is a tricky case”, said Tshwete, because the person would normally be deported to his or her home country.

The 42-year-old artist is said to have been living in Cape Town for the past few years. He later addressed his reasons for leaving the USA, saying that the country was a “very challenging place” for him to create in.
