Tucson to rename street after Martin Luther King Jr

Each year there is a particular theme for the event and this year’s theme is again a quote from the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., embodying today’s societal tone: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”.

In celebration of King, people across the nation come together to participate in service activities that positively impact different aspects of their community – the Martin Luther King Day of Service.

On Saturday, “A Day On, Not Off” beautification project will start with a breakfast and program at 8a.m.at Hamilton Elementary School, 2089Rose Villa St., Pasadena. A reception with entertainment by Genuine Imitation will follow at the Kansas Union, from 4:45 p.m.to 6:15 p.m. KU’s Black Student Union, National Pan-Hellenic Council and Student Senate representatives will lead the march. Admission is free for the day.

The goal of this prayer breakfast is to commemorate Dr. King’s Dream and those heroes, past and present who tirelessly work towards pursuit of that dream through reflection and fellowship.

Every year, Ferris’ Office of Multicultural Student Services (OMSS) hosts a celebration in honor of the infamous civil rights activist, commonly known as the “MLK celebration”. 10 a.m.-5 p.m., January 18, 3000 N. Meridian St., free, (317) 334-3322 or www.childrensmuseum.org.

Rhythm! Discovery Center – 11 a.m. The Jazz Foundation is hosting a kid-friendly jazz concert in celebration of King. The museum will open its doors for storytelling sessions and performances by The Griot Drum Ensemble, purveyors of traditional West African and diaspora drumming.

Cleaning up on MLK day of service: Local nonprofits Clean Memphis and Leadership Memphis are looking for volunteers to tidy up neighborhoods throughout the city.
