Three arrested in hunt for Jakarta attackers

On Friday, officers from the police’s counterterrorism squad said they had arrested three more alleged terrorists believed to be connected to the incident in the Jakarta suburb of Cipayung.

Depok area police chief Col. Dwiyono told MetroTV that the men were arrested at dawn at their homes in Depok on the outskirts of Jakarta.

Vietnam has expressed its condemnation of the Islamic State (IS) terror attacks which killed seven people, including the terrorists, in Jakarta on Thursday.

Jakarta police chief Tito Karnavian said one man entered the Starbucks cafe and blew himself up, wounding several inside.

Indonesia suffered several major bomb attacks by Islamic radicals between 2000 and 2009, including the 2002 strike on the resort island of Bali that killed 202 people.

Traffic is flowing and the road sweepers are busy, but the police post which was hit remains boarded up, and the Starbucks cafe at the centre of the attack is surrounded by iron fencing, curious onlookers and media using anything at hand to peer over the top at the blown out windows.

On Thursday, Jakarta was struck by terror attacks after a bomb exploded followed by an armed battle between the police and the attackers.

National police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti told reporters that Thursday’s attack was funded by IS through Bahrun Naim, an Indonesian who spent one year in jail for illegal possession of weapons in 2011, and is now in Syria fighting for the group.

In a statement, Sharif says the people and government of Pakistan “share the pain of Indonesian brethren at this critical moment”.

A wave of bomb and gun attacks rocked central Jakarta on Thursday.

“The Philippines strongly condemns the attacks in Jakarta in the morning of January 14, 2016 that claimed the lives of innocent people”, said the DFA.

The assault ended when two of the attackers were killed in a suicide bombing, said police, with the other three killed in gun battles. “He hopes the perpetrators of today’s attacks will be swiftly brought to justice”.

He has a blog which hails attacks carried out by affiliates of ISIS, and offers encouragement and advice to those who have declared allegiance to the militant group.

On Friday, the Indonesian Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center said it had uncovered a flow of funds from the Middle East to Indonesia which it alleged had been utilized to finance acts of terror.

“A large screen atop the building that houses the Starbucks displayed messages that said “#prayforjakarta” and “Indonesia Unite”.

Bahrun Naim is believed to be in the Syrian city of Raqqa and is suspected of being the mastermind behind the Jakarta attacks.

The identities of the casualties have not yet been confirmed, although the Netherlands has confirmed a Dutch man was seriously wounded and is undergoing surgery.

The Islamic State group “is very sophisticated and professional in their militancy, in every sense of the word”, said Liow.

Elsewhere, in Bali, GM of Radana Hotel Kuta, Reineer Dauly reported that: “I have monitored the situation in Bali minute by minute – also with those in the Indonesian Hotel Association – and there has not been any cancellation whatsoever”.

The blasts and gunfire that rocked Jakarta came after six years of relative calm, following a government crackdown that weakened the country’s most unsafe homegrown Islamic networks.
