Ben McAdoo succeeds Tom Coughlin as New York Giants head coach

They met again Wednesday, when he also spoke with team chairman Steve Tisch and treasurer Jonathan Tisch.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, preparing for a second-round playoff game this weekend, told Bob Glauber of Newsday that he believes McAdoo, who he worked closely with in Green Bay, is ready for a head coaching opportunity.

“We were all impressed with his energy, his enthusiasm, his vision and his desire”, Giants president and co-owner John Mara said.

“I’m honoured. It has been a privilege to work and learn under coach Coughlin”.

The Giants have something to prove. In all, the Giants interviewed six candidates, but it didn’t hurt that McAdoo had the endorsement of Eli Manning, who played well under McAdoo and ran an offense that finished tenth and eighth overall, respectively, in McAdoo’s two seasons as coordinator, despite some obvious personnel issues. He’s been productive. He is a fundamentally better quarterback in this offense; the numbers show it. If you just watch him perform, his footwork, that shows – all since Ben McAdoo arrived.

The Giants have always been one of the most stable and patient organizations in the NFL. “I take that personally and I accept my share – this is all under my watch and I know we need to get better as an organization”.

The hiring makes McAdoo the NFL’s second-youngest HC. He’s spent the last two seasons as the team’s offensive coordinator and appears to have earned the respect of the entire locker room.

“The next day at lunch, coming back from workouts, Ben was sitting in the hotel lobby waiting for me”, McCarthy said. McAdoo was coaching in the college ranks on the east coast at that time and just wanted to “talk football”. If the Eagles are still interested in Pederson, they’ll have to wait until Kansas City is eliminated from the playoffs.

Coughlin was among the many people McAdoo thanked in his opening remarks. The Eagles can not hire Pederson until the Chiefs’ season ends. The Chiefs play at New England on Saturday.

At least initially, that will define McAdoo’s first few years on the job.

The Eagles previously interviewed Duce Staley, their running backs coach, Shurmur and Adam Gase, who was named head coach of the Miami Dolphins and Ben McAdoo, Coughlin’s offensive coordinator the past two seasons with the Giants. He replaces Mike Pettine, who was sacked on January 3 after going 10-22 over two seasons.

Kelly was hired as San Francisco 49ers coach earlier Thursday. During those three seasons, the Giants have led the National Football League in players being placed on injured reserve.

Washington won the division and then promptly got clobbered at home on wildcard weekend by Green Bay.
