Harrison Ford passes Samuel L. Jackson as highest grossing USA actor

Seventy-three-year-old Ford’s 41 movies, including “The Force Awakens” has grossed a total of $4.7 billion. And Harrison Ford certainly made the right choice (or was chosen right) with Star Wars back in 1977. Ford should be offering particular thanks to George Lucas: among the actor’s greatest successes are the original trilogy of Star Wars films, as well as his four-film stint as Indiana Jones, a character created by Lucas. This isn’t the first time Ford has held this title.

The record-smashing performance of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has pushed Harrison Ford past Samuel L. Jackson to become the top-grossing actor in domestic box office history. He was the country’s highest grossing actor until Jackson overtook him, mainly thanks to The Incredibles and, yes, the Star Wars prequels-screen time doesn’t factor into these totals, so no matter how little Jackson appeared in the Star Wars films compared to Ford, it still counts!

Another striking feature of the highest-grossing list is the prominent presence of black actors.

Tom Hanks came in third and Morgan Freeman took the fourth spot on the list, followed by Eddie Murphy, Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr, Johnny Depp, Michael Caine, and Gary Oldman in the top 10.

Jackson’s films, in comparison, have grossed a mere $4.626 billion, led by Marvel’s The Avengers and its $623.4 million domestic haul. He has grossed $3.8 billion in the U.S. box office.

Meanwhile, the highest-grossing actress is Cameron Diaz, who sits in fifteenth place with $3.03 billion, EW notes.
