René Angélil, the husband of award-winning Canadian singer Celine Dion, died on Thursday at the age of 73 after a long battle with cancer, Dion announced.

Dion’s sister Claudette confirmed to the Journal Of Montreal as translated by the Daily Mail that her brother is dying of the disease, saying, “It’s very painful”.

His obituary on her website remembers him “as a gentle man, generous and kind, an unprecedented visionary, a modern Pygmalion, a Renaissance man”.

The 73-year-old music manager’s memorial will take place on January 22 at the Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal.

Caludette shared: “Daniel, 59, has been fighting brain, tongue and throat cancer and is now surrounded by family, including their 89-year-old mother”.

Angelil, who was a pop singer back in 1960s, limited his career to managing after being diagnosed with throat cancer.

Funeral arrangements for Celine Dion’s late husband, Rene Angelil, have been revealed.

Celine Dion performs at the Colosseum on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2015, in Caesars Palace.

A celebration of Angelil’s life will also be held on February 3 in Las Vegas at Caesars Palace Colosseum.

Angelil began managing Dion in the 1980s and helped her reach worldwide stardom.
