Ben McAdoo says Giants need to reload, not rebuild
On time remains five minutes early.

McAdoo’s offense has been one of the few bright spots for the team the past two years.
In his opening remarks, Giants president and CEO John Mara took exception to criticism about the pool of six candidates the team interviewed to replace Tom Coughlin and stressed that the team is satisfied with McAdoo’s promotion. They have posted losing records the past three seasons, going 6-10 the past two.
I like the pressure, McAdoo said Friday after being introduced as the Giants 17th head coach. “That’s what you live for”. It’s the opportunity of a lifetime.
“This is the capital of the world, and the football capital of the world and with that comes a certain amount of pressure, pressure I look forward to”, McAdoo told reporters Friday. What could be better?
McAdoo spoke about “evolution, not revolution” and “not looking to rebuild, but looking to reload” as part of his philosophy and approach.
“I’m the right man for the job”, Ben McAdoo said. “I’m hardened, battle-tested and I’ve been groomed for this opportunity by Super Bowl-winning coaches, players and organizations”. That’s my responsibility. We’ll have open dialogue back and forth and we’ll communicate on what we feel our needs are and how we can get better and improve, but at the end of the day, it’s about the coaches and the personnel and the locker room all pulling in the same direction.
Confident not cocky McAdoo, 38, was being sold to teams as a younger Andy Reid. Under McAdoo’s West Coast system, Manning has thrown 65 touchdowns, including a career-high 35 in 2015.
“I’m appreciative of the endorsement”, McAdoo said. He was supposed to have a second interview in Philadelphia on Thursday but the Giants gave him a second one Wednesday afternoon after Hue Jackson was hired as the Browns’ coach. He’s not afraid to show a temper.
McAdoo’s goal now is to get a fifth Super Bowl trophy for the team’s display case. If decisions on coaching hires are always fraught with uncertainty, this one is particularly risky given McAdoo’s relative lack of experience. There are no guarantees. “I was aware of that, but that was not the factor that a lot of you make it out to be”.
“I think Ben is confident, but not arrogant”, co-owner Steve Tisch said on a conference call. Their problems were many, ranging from an absentee defense to brutal clock management issues late in games to a plethora of injuries that took a toll across every unit. The Giants will have money to spend in free agency and a general manager on the firing line to prove he hasn’t lost it. They will need a strong draft and also will need key additions on both sides of the ball.
His job now is to get the franchise back on track.
When asked what stood out most about McAdoo, Reese said “Well all the guys were good, it was nothing in particular”. He said Friday that the most important thing the Giants can give McAdoo is more talent to work with. Everybody else is already taken, including Tom. “First thing Tom said to me today when I entered the building was ‘don’t mess with the clock'”. The masses got restless and even turned nasty, questioning the competence of the ownership and clamoring for the return of the recently dismissed Tom Coughlin.
The Giants offensive coordinator the past two seasons refused to discuss his staff, saying things were fluid. He is expected to announce his staff in a couple of weeks, once all the positions are filled.
