Many buildings were damaged across the region as walls cracked and crumbled as the ground shook.

Strong tremors have been felt across the region.

All six confirmed deaths were in the state of Manipur, local police said.

People in Manipur’s capital Imphal and its adjoining areas woke up to a horrifying Monday as tremors struck at 4:35 am.

There were no immediate reports of casualties on the Myanmar side of the border, a remote and sparsely populated area that suffered widespread damage this summer from landslides caused by torrential monsoon rains.

People in the area should anticipate aftershocks over the next several days, but they will likely be of a lesser magnitude than the one that struck early Monday morning.

Army and Air Force have joined the relief operations and two teams of National Disaster Response Force have been rushed to Imphal while one was being sent to Assam where at least 20 people were injured.

Indian Home Ministry spokesman Kuldeep Singh Dhatwalia told CNN that 43 people had been injured in addition to the 6 deaths in Manipur and that residential and government buildings had been damaged in Imphal.

The quake was originally reported to have measured 6.8 magnitude.
