A US judge rejected Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s bid for a new trial and ordered him to pay victims of the deadly attack more than $101 million in restitution.

The restitution payments “shall commence immediately” and any payment less than the total amount “shall be divided and distributed proportionately among the victims”, according to court documents.

Tsarnaev was convicted of 30 federal charges and sentenced to death for his role in the attack.

He also rejected Tsarnaev’s claim that a recent US Supreme Court decision redefined some of the crimes that Tsarnaev was convicted of, denying the claim that the new definitions warrant a new trial.

He also noted that defense attorney Judith Clarke admitted in her opening statements that Tsarnaev, along with his older brother Tamerlan, carried out the attack, saying “It was him”. His older brother Tamerlan also participated in the attack, but died three days after in a standoff with police, that left an officer dead.

The defense had focused their efforts on trying to spare Tsarnaev the death penalty, rather than prove his innocence.

Tsarnaev, 22, is being held at the federal supermax prison in Colorado during his appeal.
