Blair Walsh visits Northpoint Elementary to say thank you

After Minnesota Vikings kicker Blair Walsh had angry fans lashing out at him for missing a game-winning field goal in the playoffs last weekend, a group of kind first-graders wrote letters to lift his spirits.

On Thursday, Walsh met with the local elementary school students who did their best to lift the kicker’s spirits.

Myhre and her co-workers then gave their students the assignment to write a letter showing empathy and encouragement for Walsh.

Once you get past the cynical urges to wonder if Walsh would have gotten a parade had he missed one more field goal, you realize that this outpouring and reaction is in fact a nice story. Walsh needed to drill a 27-yard kick to send the Vikings to the desert to face Arizona, but Walsh botched the kick wid left.

The kicker said he received “too many [letters] to count – probably from every one of those kids”. He spoke to the class and thanked them for their kind deeds.

“These kids really made a difference in my life, so I’m glad I can come in here and brighten their day”, Walsh said. ‘Everyone makes mistakes sometimes. Instead, Minnesota’s season is over, Walsh has to answer questions about how he missed a perceived easy field goal, and things like this photo happen.

“It’s a great teaching point”, Walsh said. He has already expressed that he felt he let everyone down because of it. However, seeing that his teammates and the kids of Minnesota are there to encourage and support him should mean a lot to the Vikings kicker. One time I made a mistake when I was doing a cartwheel.
