Giants make it official, name McAdoo as head coach

Meanwhile in NY, the Giants have promoted offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo to head coach. He will formally be introduced at a news conference on Friday morning.

McAdoo, who signed a four-year deal, said he would welcome Coughlin’s return to the facility should he accept owner John Mara’s offer to join the club in an advisory role. “We talked to six guys and I meant what I said before, I was really taken aback at how impressive they all were”.

The Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tennessee Titans are now the only teams without coaches and with former Giants head coach Tom Coughlin officially pulling out of the Eagles coach hunt for some reason, all three seem to be twisting in the wind.

The Giants have something to prove.

McAdoo has had a meteoric rise in the coaching ranks.

McAdoo earned praise for his work with Manning, who completed 63 percent of his passes the past two seasons under McAdoo’s tutelage and threw for 65 touchdowns with only 28 interceptions.

“This job is not for the faint of heart and I’m the right man for the job”, McAdoo said to The New York Post.

The Giants’ 420 points this past season was the fifth-highest total in franchise history, and their 5,952 net yards was the third-highest total. Leadership was the problem with this Giants team and it kept them from taking a 14-2 record into the playoffs.

“I think Coach McAdoo is a great coach, a great teacher, and will be a great leader for this team”. “I want to continue to grow with him and the team and get this organization back where it needs to be”. “Ever since I’ve been here, our coaches, our head coach and our personnel people have always been part of the process with personnel”.

“Excited for Coach McAdoo”, Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara said in a text to The Associated Press.

“At the end of the day we’re paid to win, not just compete”, McAdoo added. “He drove all night just for the opportunity to sit and talk football”.

McAdoo was the obvious choice for the Giants. His version of the West Coast offense – and the addition of Odell Beckham Jr. – has helped revive the offense.

While Manning’s support of McAdoo certainly was a factor, the Giants strongly considered former National Football League head coaches Mike Smith (Falcons) and Doug Marrone (Bills).

McAdoo, whose success with quarterback Eli Manning during his two seasons as a coordinator burnished his head-coaching résumé, said whatever roster he had would be “committed to discipline and poise” and that his message to the players would be about pride and work ethic.

McAdoo learned under Coughlin and has shown some of his mentor’s attitudes. He is not afraid to gamble. With a bottle of water and a few pieces of paper in hand, he started his opening statement. Instead, Manning made a mistake throwing the ball away and that stopped the clock.

McCarthy and McAdoo coached together before McCarthy came to Green Bay, and he brought McAdoo with him. Not only did they try to save face by forcing him to resign – as if it was his decision – but they did so after signing him to a lame duck, one-year contract extension that had him coaching the team in 2016. “I’m sure his players and the fans are all excited”.
