Long-time Giants head coach Coughlin steps down

“I still believe Jerry Reese is the right guy”, Mara said.

Coughlin, who served 12 seasons as head coach, was part of 3 Super Bowl championships, two of which came in a span of 5 years. “And it is up to us now to turn that around and get back to where I think we should be”, he continued.

The best reaction to the separation of head coach Tom Coughlin from the New York Giants was from a Seahawks fan.

Coughlin released a statement on Monday stating it was the right time to resign. NY lost five games in the final 74 seconds of regulation, including four in the final 7 seconds.

Manning was understandably upset, as after 12 years, he’ll have a new coach for the first time in his career next season.

One of the highlights – of the many highlights – from Coughlin’s presser was when he had a human moment with his former quarterback, Eli Manning.

Former New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin speaks during a news conference Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016, in East Rutherford, N.J. We had a great relationship at the Giants when we were on the same staff and had good relationships throughout our respective careers. “I feel that, we as players, we failed him by not playing to the level we could”. “You’ve gotta manufacture wins in different ways”.

“At the end of the day, we didn’t provide (Coughlin) with enough talent”, Mara said. “He’s going to be straight blunt with it, he’s not going to sugarcoat anything, he’s going to keep it original and that’s what he did”.

The team has begun a coaching search for Coughlin’s replacement. Then on Black Monday, Coughlin threw us all a curve ball and stepped down as the Giants head coach.

General manager Jerry Reese, who is largely responsible for constructing the team, appears to be safe in his role, as the Giants are one of the most patient and stable franchises in the NFL. In an emotional farewell, he thanked his players and the organization and said he might not be done coaching. The sixty nine year old has been a coach since 1969 in the college level, but started coaching the National Football League in 1984 with the Philadelphia Eagles as a wide receiver coach.

“It was truly fulfilling to be the leader of those teams”, Coughlin said.
