CHICAGO Andrew Shaw scored two goals and the Chicago Blackhawks celebrated coach Joel Quenneville’s contract extension Tuesday night with a 3-2 win over the Nashville Predators for their eighth consecutive victory. His next win will tie him with legendary New York Islanders coach Al Arbour for second on the NHL’s all-time wins list.
This story will be updated.
Mike Ribeiro and Filip Forsberg scored for the Predators but it wasn’t enough as Pekka Rinne suffered the loss in goal.
Quenneville is in his 19th season as an National Hockey League coach, with an overall record of 781-451-77-110.
After telling reporters that the reigning Stanley Cup champions are “trending in the right direction”, Kane and the Blackhawks look to keep the visiting Nashville Predators spiraling down the standings on Tuesday when the Central Division rivals meet at the United Center.
CSN Chicago’s Blackhawks Talk noted the 57-year-old coach is now under contract through the 2019-20 campaign. The Blackhawks are 343-168-69 under Quenneville’s stewardship.
“If (Quenneville) broke his record, it means that we’ve got a lot of wins in us”, Stan Bowman said.
Having the likes of Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith obviously helps the cause, but he’s found a way to translate that talent into consistent titles. “But we did some good things to get the lead”, Quenneville said.
Joe Pavelski and Joel Ward scored late to seal the win after Chris Tierney and Joe Thornton scored first-period goals for the Sharks. “Coming in here when we were at a young age, I think he taught a lot of us a specific way to play without taking away any creativity or freedom….” “The only way to beat teams is to out work them and play harder than them, and we do that for a period, but it’s a game, and you need to do that for three periods”. Quenneville rarely practices during busy stretches of games on the schedule, something that may not have happened at the beginning of his coaching career. “We always had a heck of a time trying to beat him, so it’s a very special [honor] and [I] feel fortunate”.
Shaw scored again to give Chicago a 2-0 lead with 13:46 remaining in the second period.

Ekman-Larsson, who scored from the left point, has six game-winning goals this season for the Coyotes, who overcame a two-goal deficit in the third period to win their fourth straight.
