TCU’s record comeback snatches Alamo bowl victory

Apologies to anybody who stopped watching the Alamo Bowl at halftime on Saturday night when the TCU Horned Frogs were down big to the Oregon Ducks, because a blowout turned into one of the most dramatic games of the season.

It matched the 31-point comeback accomplished by Texas Tech, when the Red Raiders surged past Minnesota in the 2006 Insight Bowl.

Despite the presence of star tailback Royce Freeman (26 carries, 130 yards, three TDs), Oregon’s offense managed only 18 total yards in the entire second half after putting up 376 yards in the first half.

Quarterback Vernon Adams did not come back on the field to start the 2 half for Oregon.

“It was a storybook game for me”, Kohlhausen said.

“You really have to appreciate the leadership that these guys had, and there’s some big shoes to fill, but I think we have guys that are going to be ready to take those shoes this upcoming season”.

OR was guided to its big early lead early by quarterback Vernon Adams Jr., who passed for 197 yards, scrambled out of several sacks and marched his team to four touchdowns. They limited normally powerful OR to 18 yards on 18 plays. The last time Lockie saw significant playing time was against Washington State on October 10, when Adams was out with a broken finger and the Ducks blew a fourth quarter lead and fell 45-38, also in triple-overtime.

OR went three-and-out on its first drive but then scored first when Adams threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Carrington in the first quarter.

TCU was gaining confidence with each play while OR seemed stuck in neutral.

Before a sell-out crowd of more than 64,000 people TCU defeated OR, 47-41.

It was the fourth time this season TCU had scored the winning points in the final 70 seconds of a game. TCU started a fervent comeback that began with a huge 4th and 5 touchdown pass from fifth-year senior and best name-of-the-year award victor Bram Kohlhausen to make the game 31-10.

After the teams exchanged field goals in the second overtime, Kohlhausen sneaked around the right end on an option, and seemingly disappeared behind his blockers until he was in the end zone.

The theme continued in the fourth quarter when TCU tied the game with less a minute left in the game. Cook hit 12-of-24 passes for 163 yards with a score and a pick, and Charles Jones led the Kansas State rushing attack with six carries for 40 yards – 35 of which came on one run.

“Like the culture here at TCU, I feel like we always play our best games with our backs against the wall”, Horned Frog tailback Aaron Green said.

Hackenberg announced after the game that he would enter the National Football League draft.

The win allows Arkansas to close on a high note for the second consecutive season. (3) celebrates an OR touchdown against TCU during the first half of the Alamo Bowl NCAA college football game Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, in San Antonio. The Rose Bowl on Friday drew its lowest rating (7.9) since it became part of the BCS in 1999.
