It sets director Alejandro Inarritu for a possible back-to-back win following his best-picture winning “Birdman” past year.
“This is nearly like an experimental art film”.
“I haven’t fully processed it, if that makes sense, because I’ve literally just come from work and I’m just a little bit braindead, but it’s a really cool day but I haven’t really sat with it yet”.
DiCaprio – who on Sunday won a Golden Globe for his performance – is up for best actor in the Academy Awards.
Leonardo said: “We’re all very proud of it. It’s incredible to do a movie like this, it’s such an experimental thing…”
Domhnall Gleeson (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Will Poulter (The Maze Runner) co-star in what is expected to be the Academy Award favourite in multiples categories – particularly after garnering the Golden Globe for Best Film in a Drama this week as well.
“In a year with an extraordinary number of great performances by black actors that were embraced by audiences and embraced by critics, for them all to get ignored is tragic”, said Reginald Hudlin, who will produce the Feb 28 awards ceremony hosted by comedian Chris Rock.
The film is based on the true story of Hugh Glass, who was one of the first explorers to visit uncharted American wilderness.
He then begins a 200-mile trek through brutal terrain on the trail of the man who betrayed him, John Fitzgerald, played by Tom Hardy.
