‘Revenant’, ‘Martian’ win big at Globes – DiCaprio wins Best Actor Award

It wasn’t that “The Revenant”, which won best picture and also scored wins for Leonardo DiCaprio as best lead actor, and Alejandro G. Inarritu as best director, was not deserving, but critics only gave it a lukewarm response. Boyhood won it past year, but in a flawless tit for tat, was snubbed at the Oscars in favour of Inarritu’s Birdman.

Ridley Scott’s science fiction movie The Martian was awarded in a rather unusual category for this film: Comedy or Musical; accordingly, the film’s star Matt Damon won the nomination of the Best Actor in Musical or Comedy.

And “The Big Short”, based on a book about the financial crisis of 2007-2008, was also snubbed, going zero for four.

The Golden Globes is the second major award ceremony of the year, after the Academy Awards. Right? Well, it didn’t, and neither did other favorites such as “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Carol“.

But all will come into focus on Thursday when Oscar nominees are announced. As for a potential Oscar nom, Gaga sighed, “Shall we just take it a day at a time, dear?”

In fact, there has never been any rhyme or reason to the nominations or winners of this awards show, which has inexplicably become one of the biggest trophies in Hollywood. For one, there’s the open bar (this year, returning host Ricky Gervais made his roast-like remarks with a beer glass on hand all night).

The Golden Globe has been awarded since 1944 for movies and television films. How else to explain why that year Zsa Zsa Gabor won the prize as “Most Glamorous Actress”-as if that were an artistic achievement?” That said, it is fairly safe to assume that if Larson wins the SAG Award as well, the odds will shift in her favor. But in case you’ve missed it, here are his funniest jokes and the celebrities at the end of them.

“Mr. Robot”, which won best TV drama, is a relatively unknown series on the USA Network and Lady Gaga (who is supremely talented as a singer and a performer) won a Globe, even though her performance was simply wooden as a blood-sucking creep in “American Horror Story: Hotel”. The crowd greeted him with a standing ovation.

Ricky Gervais kicked off the Golden Globe Awards with a monologue that skewered NBC, Jennifer Lawrence’s campaign for equality between men and women in Hollywood and, yes, Caitlyn Jenner. This year, the HFPA’s pick for best foreign language film, “Son of Saul”, matches my own for 2015’s best film in any language.

Best actress in a TV drama went to Taraji P. Henson for “Empire”. In his acceptance speech, the actor thanked his imaginary friend Rocky Balboa, for being the best friend he ever had.

The Globes clearly ain’t a popularity contest, as the underdog winners of new TV series Mozart In The Jungle and Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Limited Series or TV movie Maura Tierney (above) from The Affair were given the awkward silent treatment from the media.

Unlike the Oscars, the Golden Globes also honors television shows.
