‘The Revenant’ Leads Academy Awards Nominations

Many had hoped Ridley Scott would finally earn his first best director Oscar for “The Martian”, which landed seven nominations overall, including one for star Matt Damon. Inarritu, who won the best director Oscar a year ago for “The Birdman”, said it meant a lot to be appreciated for the movie.

According to Korea Herald, the film, set in 1823 Montana and South Dakota, topped the Oscars nominations list with 12 nods and will lead the pack in the annual race for Hollywood’s highest honors. Although the film got six nominations, Spielberg and the protagonist Tom Hanks didn’t get any. The latter film was considered a strong contender for a best-picture nomination, having been nominated by the Producers Guild, but it was left empty-handed. DiCaprio is vying for the Best Actor against Eddie Redmayne, Michael Fassbender and others.

Leonardo DiCaprio poses for the shutterbugs upon arrival. This nomination made 25-year-old Lawrence become the youngest actress nominated four times. Coogler was not included in the best director nominations, but Sylvester Stallone, who reprised a role from the Rocky film franchise in “Creed“, received a best supporting actor nomination.

The Academy had already come in for heavy criticism for a lack of diversity at last year’s Oscars at which all the acting slots went to white performers. This year I think Alejandro González Iñárritu will take home his second consecutive Best Picture win for the movie that defied the standards of what it takes to make a film yet again, The Revenant.

The nominees for best supporting actress are Rooney Mara (“Carol”), Kate Winslet (“Steve Jobs”), Jennifer Jason Leigh (“The Hateful Eight”), Rachel McAdams (“Spotlight”) and Alicia Vikander (“The Danish Girl”). “Making “The Revenant” was one of the most rewarding and collaborative experiences of my life”.
