Oculus Rift to go on sale in March for $599

It said the firm’s founder, Palmer Luckey, would be answering questions about the Rift on a Reddit Q&A session on Wednesday at 18:00 PCT (02:00 GMT). That’s in line with the price range for a headset and PC that Oculus executives had floated past year.

Oculus VR, the company behind the new virtual reality gaming headset Oculus Rift, has officially started taking preorders, promising to give users a glimpse into the future. You can finally pre-order one for $599.

A ship date and the price for Oculus Rift has been revealed. For most consumers, $599 – on top of the cost of a beefy desktop PC – is way too much. It isn’t clear whether the company intends to announce more details before pre-orders begin. Rift will also come bundled with a Microsoft Xbox controller according to an announcement made by Xbox head, Phil Spencer, during an Oculus press conference.

But the Rift will require a fairly powerful computer. Oculus said that it will be “sharing everything you need to know to order your Rift on Wednesday when pre-orders go live”.

In 2014, the campaign raised more than $2 million and Facebook bought the company for billion. Valkyrie is a space dogfighting game, putting players in the cockpit of their own virtual intergalctic ship, while Lucky’s Tale is a platformer game reminiscent of Super Mario Bros and Banjo-Kazooie. Samsung launched the Gear VR, which is itself the product of an Oculus partnership, in late 2015, but its smartphone-powered experiences fall far short of what the Rift is capable of.
