Disney faces bigger hurdles in matching its U.S success in China and other Asian countries, where the “Star Wars” franchise isnt as well known or have as big a following as in the West. For example, the movie didnt open as No. 1 in South Korea or Vietnam.

“I think the latest film really gripped people’s imagination with the universe it presented”, said a Chinese fan in Shanghai. It’s believed that Star Wars: The Force Awakens will have to make around $100 million more than this total to come close to Avatar’s sum, and their record-breaking opening figures suggest that’s well within their reach. “The Force Awakens” grossed an estimated $53 million in two days, the biggest Saturday-Sunday debut ever in that country. It went on to gross $390.9 million in China, just over a quarter of the movie’s total earnings.

It dominated the North American box office for a fourth consecutive weekend, becoming that market’s top grossing film of all time with $812 million in cumulative sales. As expected, the spaceship chases are more intense than ever, the lightsaber effects are simply phenomenal, and, naturally, Chewbacca remains one of the best-loved characters to star in anything, ever. Domestically, it has pulled $39.5 million so far.

Aimed at younger females and Latino moviegoers, the PG-13 supernatural scary flick landed in fourth place at the domestic box office, behind the Paramount Pictures comedy “Daddy’s Home”.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens just barely managed to edge out its biggest competition this weekend: Golden Globes juggernaut The Revenant, which made its nationwide debut this weekend to the tune of $38 million. With that said, China is a very different market now. “The Forest”, $13.1 million ($450,000 international). 5.

“The Force Awakens” brought in an estimated $41.6 million, but the real story was overseas. Sisters, $US7.2 million ($US3.4 million) 6. In the next few weeks it should also top the $1.16 global gross by Furious 7 to claim number 1 on all three 2015 charts.
