US imposes new Iran sanctions for ballistic missile testing

Jan 16 The United States should promptly slap sanctions on Iran for ballistic missile tests that violated U.N. Security Council resolutions, Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal urged on Saturday. Moreover, IAEA would also need to continue to monitor Iran’s nuclear program “to verify their ongoing compliance with the agreement”. “Officials view those activities as separate from the nuclear deal”. As a result, sanctions were lifted.

Earnest emphasized that Iran would not receive any sanctions relief until the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) could “independently verify” that Tehran was upholding its commitments under the nuclear agreement.

The new sanctions by the Treasury department target those missile activities.

“I think there might be a misunderstanding of what our whole agreement consists of”, she added, saying that if elected, she would enforce it. “There have to be consequences if Iran veers away from what it agreed to”.

“But we shouldn’t thank Iran for the prisoners or for following through on its obligations”.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday hailed the lifting of global sanctions on his country following the entry into force of last July’s momentous nuclear deal with major powers. The attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, left U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans dead. In a statement released to the press, the leading Democratic candidate took a tougher stance than President Obama and Secretary of State Kerry.
