Winning the Best Actor Oscar for the first time next month will be considered by many fans and critics as a huge milestone for Leonardo DiCaprio.

Once again this year, the Academy Awards field was whitewashed with no one of colour nominated in either of the acting nominations.

The 41-year-old star – who has been nominated four times for the Best Actor award at the Oscars – has admitted to feeling some of his performances and movies have deserved more credit than they’ve been given. The 2016 Oscar nominations have proven they could.

And women haven’t fared particularly well either, although they’ve done slightly better than past year, with screenwriters Emma Donoghue, Phyllis Nagy, Meg LeFauve and Andrea Berloff nominated for their work (but not Amy Schumer, as expected for her Trainwreck screenplay).

If DiCaprio wins, it will be his first-ever Oscar in his 25-year career.

Best Actress: Cate Blanchett, Carol; Brie Larson, Room; Jennifer Lawrence, Joy; Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years; Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn. A good number of the 322 people invited past year were from overseas, and one awards campaigner privately suggested that this group could be making it tougher for African-American films, whose stories might resonate less with worldwide audiences. I guess we are going to have to wait and see.

The lead actor race also delivered no major surprises, with nominations for Bryan Cranston (“Trumbo”), Matt Damon (“The Martian”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Revenant”), Eddie Redmayne (“The Danish Girl“) and Michael Fassbender (“Steve Jobs”).

And though it failed to land a coveted Best Picture nomination, Straight Outta Compton did score a Best Original Screenplay nomination for its trio of white writers (insert joke here, Mr. Rock) and is now playing on select Delta, Aer Lingus and Air France flights worldwide.

I don’t know about you, but I have been calling for Tom Hardy to pick up a Best Supporting Actor gong all awards season – sadly, he has been overlooked by the Baftas, Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild. but common sense prevailed on Thursday afternoon.

Which she followed with: Theres even an additional wrinkle to the controversy this year.

The Oscars will be awarded in Los Angeles on February 28. A best picture nomination may have been a bit of a long shot for the highest-grossing film in USA history, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a bit of a disappointment considering how well the film has been received.

The Revenant earns 12 Oscar nominations, boosting Leonardo Di Caprio's chances
